BUILD CONFIDENCE

OVERVIEW

In this first year, all age groups will start at the start. Our scaffolded learning journey ensures that all children, whether they are absolute beginners or more seasoned ‘techies’, can grow at their own pace.

  • Find their voice: Your child will choose from a broad range of content (creative media, coding, cloud computing, online safety and more), finding their creative voice
  • Set targets: They will agree targets with their parents, which can be mix of more academic training (e.g. cloud computing) and more fun-focussed projects (e.g. animation) – see ‘Parents’ page for more about motivation and rewards
  • Confident, responsible digital citizen: Each step of the journey includes six age appropriate ‘Be Smart’ mini courses for teaching online safety – great for parents and children to be aware of the age-appropriate risks they face online
  • ePortfolio: Your child will start to build their ePortfolio, that they can share with friends and family. They can also receive comments and feedback directly in Cocoon, enabling safe sharing for all children.

Skills Learned:

Children will develop a range of beginner – intermediate skills across their choice of courses within our three key learning areas (Creative Media, Coding and Cloud Computing). Our developmental paths are based on computing and tech curricula around the world. You know your child will always be moving forward, in safe hands.

Feedback and Recognition:

  • Achievement badges to reward progress at regular intervals (e.g. completing a course)
  • Cocoon TECH:CLUB certificate
  • Real time feedback and reviews from friends and family through your personalised ‘Progress Hub’
  • Instant feedback and advice during the live TECH:CLUBs
  • Opportunity to work with personal mentor for one to one support; including formal assessment and personal development plan building

GET CREATIVE

OVERVIEW

In this second year, children will build upon skills learned in the first year. As part of the scaffolded learning journey, all children will progress to more complex use of skills learned and software/ apps used previously. They will also begin to combine different learning areas (e.g. animation and film) and move on to some more advanced software/ apps.

  • Develop their voice: Children will have begun to develop preferred learning areas/ areas of expertise during the first year. They will nurture that growth in the second year, with opportunities to develop specialty learning.
  • Set targets: The child will have received their certificate for the first year, based on their final score for the year. The score will now return to zero and a more informed child and parent will set new goals for the second year.
  • Confident, responsible digital citizen: Children will continue to progress through ongoing mini courses with the most up-to-date, age-appropriate content.
  • ePortfolio: They will continue to build their ePortfolio, developing an ever more in-depth portfolio as well as an increasingly deeper network of friends and family to share their work with and receive feedback from.

Skills Learned:

Children will progress into intermediate application of skills, specifically continuing to move beyond the ‘mechanics’ of any individual program or app. ‘Moving beyond the mechanics’ refers to being able to think in terms of a finished product and then selecting the best apps to achieve this goal.

PRO TECHY

OVERVIEW

Year 3 will see children progress to a more seamless integration of skills from different learning areas and different apps and programmes. For example, including green screen films in an eBook with a separate soundscape would be the type of project you can start expecting to find in your child’s ePortfolio.

  • Express themselves: Now that they’re confident techies, they will begin to express themselves with some personal flare! Our mentors increasingly become facilitators, providing examples of best practice, demonstrating how essential skills are done to help children get to the next level, discussing children’s ideas with them and allowing them to show where their real talents lie!
  • Use targets as progress markers: With their second certificate achieved and their achievement badges mounting up, we will work with the children to ensure that, more than ever, they are using the target setting tool to visualise where they want to go. They will develop a path of progress markers, or milestones, that indicates specific achievements on the way to their ultimate goal.
  • Confident, responsible digital citizen: Children will continue to progress through ongoing mini courses with the most up-to-date, age-appropriate content.
  • ePortfolio: Continues on the same line of progression that was started in the previous two years.

Feedback and Recognition:

  • Achievement badges to reward progress at regular intervals (e.g. completing a course)
  • Cocoon TECH:CLUB certificate
  • Real time feedback and reviews from friends and family through your personalised ‘Progress Hub’

SPECIALIST LEVEL 1

OVERVIEW

Your child will have the option to continue with the multimedia approach to their learning journey, or specialise in a specific area (e.g. film making, digital marketing or coding). We will help guide this decision on an ongoing basis throughout their first three years. But more formally, we will provide them a ‘reflection and projection’ assessment as they enter their fourth year working with us to help them reach a decision.

  • Developing a specialty: Children will build a clear, purposeful learning journey – with each course contributing in a structured way to the end-of-year goal. For example, if the end-of-year goal is to have started the journey to becoming a digital marketer, then your child will have selected courses that include digital marketing skills (graphic design, video, web design, marketing etc).
  • Keeping it multimedia: Children will keep a multimedia focus to their learning journey, the degree to which they do so will be up to them. For example, if a child specialises in ‘coding’, we would like to see them develop other parallel skills such as graphic design, or video editing. The reasons being that (A) we want to prioritise the ‘fun’ aspect of Cocoon, and not get too serious; (B) children don’t necessarily know what they want to commit to for the long term (do any of us?!), so we want to keep their options open; (C) in the modern workplace, having a good understanding of every element of a project is invaluable – for example, a coder that understands the visual impact and the user experience is going to be more successful and a better team contributor than a coder who blindly completes her/ his tasks as if they are separate to the overall team project
  • Online Safety and ePortfolios: Children will continue to build their understanding of age-appropriate, up-to-date threats. They will also continue to build their ePortfolio – which, by this point, will be becoming a fantastic collection of work!

Feedback and Recognition:

Children will continue with Cocoon’s badges, certification and formal assessment/ support. They will also be supported in their journey toward formal, internationally recognised certification; both from Cocoon and from leading platforms such as Google.

SPECIALIST LEVEL 3

OVERVIEW

Your child’s bespoke journey doesn’t end after five years, and indeed it doesn’t have to end after their sixth year with us either. With our background in primary and secondary school teaching, we understand the developmental process that young learners go through between the ages of 4 and 18. We’re more than ready to help your child go on to become the next Mark Zuckerburg, Steven Spielberg, or a regular mom/ dad like you and I who has a happy life and technology is something they can use for fun, to help with work, and that makes life generally easier!

Feedback and Recognition:

Children will continue with Cocoon’s badges, certification and formal assessment/ support. They will also be supported in their journey toward formal, internationally recognised certification; both from Cocoon and from leading platforms such as Google.
